By “Harold and Kumar” and “Designated Survivor” actor Kal Penn is set to star in “Trust Me, I’m a Doctor,” a film about the final days of actress and model Anna Nicole Smith.
Smith died of an accidental overdose at the age of just 39 in 2007, spawning a tabloid feeding frenzy around her death.
The new film is based on Dr. Sandeep Kapoor’s 2017 book of the same name and follows Smith’s pain-medication doctor whose life was turned upside down when he was implicated in the wrongful death trials of the one-time Playboy centerfold.
Written and directed by Thane Economou (“The Wedding Party”), the project marks a second film about Smith in the works in recent months. The other, “Hurricanna,” recently wrapped with Sylvia Hoeks as Smith and Holly Hunter as Smith’s therapist.
Penn and Dan Spilo are executive producing ‘Doctor’ which will shoot in the spring in Toronto. Casting for the role of Smith is underway.
