Jon Stewart is back as the host of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” on Mondays and the network has now posted an ‘After the Cut’ video which explains part of his on-air intro this past week.
In the intro, Stewart called himself “captain of the dying medium” and explained that a gentleman referred to TV as dying to him that night.
The video shows what happened. In a pre-show questions from the audience segment, one audience member asked about the relevance of TV in the social media age as that’s where “young people [are] getting all of their information and entertainment from”.
A bit further on, said audience member also says that “TV is dying”. Stewart responds back:
“Is that true?. You still watch TV but you just watch it on your computer [or phone]. You understand that’s still TV? You’re just watching it on a different delivery service… It’s still an opiate for the masses as is television, you’re just getting it in smaller bites. But it’s still TV. We make it.”
Stewart’s return has been a ratings blockbuster for Comedy Central, the show pulling in its highest viewership since Stewart’s final episode in 2015.
