“Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth,” the about to release second of a planned trilogy of games remaking “Final Fantasy 7,” has just landed the second-highest Metacritic score of any game in the entire “Final Fantasy” franchise.
The title is pulling in a 93/100 on the review aggregator, making it second only to “Final Fantasy 9” with 94 and ahead of the likes of the original “Final Fantasy 7,” and both “Final Fantasy 6” and “Final Fantasy 12” which are all at 92. “Final Fantasy 8” scored 90.
The first of the remake trilogy, “Final Fantasy VII Remake,” pulled in an 87 for its original version and an 89 for its Intergrade update. Other recent main series entries like “Final Fantasy 15” got an 81, whilst “Final Fantasy 16” was an 87.
‘Rebirth’ is scoring praise for its open world, variety of content, combat system, character depth, music, and presentation, but the ending and sidequests have received more of a mixed reception.
Whereas ‘Remake’ was set entirely in the city of Midgar, ‘Rebirth’ unfolds in the open world of The Planet and spans up to the Forgotten Capital – though a visit to Wutai has been moved to the third installment.
