The manga and anime megafranchise “Naruto” is getting the live-action, big-budget Hollywood film treatment.
“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” co-writer/director will helm the film which has been set up at Lionsgate. He’s also producing alongside Jeyun Munford, Jeremy Latcham, Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Emmy Yu.
Masashi Kishimoto created the franchise, a coming-of-age story about a young and enthusiastic ninja named Naruto Uzumaki who wants to grow up to be the leader of his ninja village but also happens to have the spirit of a dragon inside him.
Cretton has Kishimoto’s blessing for the project, the latter saying in a statement:
“When I heard of Destin’s attachment, it happened to be right after watching a blockbuster action film of his, and I thought he would be the perfect director for Naruto. After enjoying his other films and understanding that his forte is in creating solid dramas about people, I became convinced that there is no other director for Naturo. In actually meeting Destin, I also found him to be an open-minded director who was willing to embrace my input, and felt strongly that we would be able to cooperate together in the production process.”
The manga was serialized and ran from 1999 to 2014. It became one or the world’s most popular IPs with over 250 million copies of the collected volumes sold.
The property also launched several animated series on Cartoon Network, Disney XD, Adult Swim, and others. It also has been a video game and merchandising smash.
