Is “Oppenheimer” star Cillian Murphy returning for “28 Years Later”? Earlier this year came the news that a new sequel to 2000’s “28 Days Later” was in the works, one titled “28 Years Later” and the first of a planned trilogy.
Not only that, but “28 Days Later” director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland were also returning in the same capacity and Murphy, who broke out starring in the original, would be executive producing.
It begged the obvious question as to whether Murphy would be reprising his role. Asked about the film, he told Happy Sad Confused podcast recently:
“It’s for (Danny Boyle and Alex Garland) to speak about, I suppose, but I think it’s been brewing for a while. The first movie was so important for me, as an actor. I love working with those guys. Alex has an idea. And Danny directing is just huge. Watch this space.”
Now, a recent posting on Production Weekly (via World of Reel) says filming is slated to begin in May and has Murphy listed as the lead actor on the film which suggests something’s up. For now, however, there’s no official confirmation of his onscreen involvement.
Sony Pictures won a heated bidding war for the property last month and each planned film is tipped to have a $60 million budget. A guaranteed theatrical release is also set.
