After a 36-year gap, Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice returns to the big screen. The sequel – Beetlejuice Beetlejuice – is currently in post-production, meaning a teaser could arrive soon. Michael Keaton is back in the lead, and he’s joined by fellow returnees Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz and Catherine O’Hara as Delia Deetz.

Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe, Justin Theroux, and Monica Bellucci will also star. Keaton has given an interview to People magazine. He said it took him and Tim Burton years to overcome their caution about doing a sequel. Even now, they are mostly doing it to see if they can pull it off. He also said that going practical over CGI has been their guiding light:

“The one thing that he [Burton] and I decided on early, early, early on from the beginning, if we ever did it again, I was totally not interested in doing something where there was too much technology. It had to feel handmade.

What made it fun was watching somebody in the corner actually holding something up for you, to watch everybody in the shrunken head room and say, ‘Those are people under there, operating these things, trying to get it right.’

When you get to do that again after years of standing in front of a giant screen, pretending somebody’s across the way from you, this is just enormous fun.”

Beetlejuice was a critical and commercial success, grossing $74.7 million on a $15 million budget. It won the Academy Award for Best Makeup and three Saturn Awards: Best Horror Film, Best Makeup, and Best Supporting Actress for Sylvia Sidney. The film’s success spawned an animated television series, video games, and a 2018 stage musical.

It originally came into being while Batman was already in progress at script stage. After the financial success of Pee-wee’s Big Adventure (1985), Burton was a hotter property in Hollywood and was already working on the script for Batman with Sam Hamm. While Warner Bros. was willing to pay for the script’s development, it was less willing to green-light Batman.

Burton had become disheartened by the lack of courage by the studio, and the lack of imagination and originality in the scripts he had been sent, so he created Beetlejuice, eventually getting it off the ground before Batman.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is set to premiere in cinemas on September 6th.
