In a major story over on The Digital Bits, the outlet reports that Disney and Sony have just done a major deal that will see Sony Pictures Home Entertainment take over all of Disney’s physical media production going forward.
Sony will “handle and oversee the authoring and compression of discs, work with the replicators and packaging vendors, and that they’ll oversee the titles as they go out to the distributors and on to retailers.”
The outlet received the news two weeks ago, just after the deal was reportedly signed. Multiple independent sources within the industry have subsequently confirmed the report for them.
Disney’s physical media operation has been undergoing turmoil of late, so such a deal is seen as being more efficient and cost-effective for the Mouse House.
The report goes into the organisational nightmare that’s going on in-house at Disney where those actually working on the discs don’t have decision-making power, every single little detail has to be kicked up multiple levels of management and involves multiple times more people than is necessary.
The hope is that if this can lead to Disney releasing films more efficiently on disc, they may start releasing more of them. Unfortunately it’s doubtful they’ll come back to markets they’ve abandoned (eg. Australia).
As part of the Disney and Sony arrangement, Disney reportedly also plans to shutter their Disney Movie Club.
