Ahead of the release of Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two” in cinemas next week, this past week saw a re-release of “Dune” in several countries in an attempt to generate buzz.
It appears to have worked as in just one week the 2021 sci-fi epic racked up an additional $30 million worldwide, pushing that first film’s global total to $433 million.
In fact, the re-release grossed more globally than the entire run of several of this year’s Oscar contenders like “The Holdovers” and “American Fiction”.
Partly fueling the success was that the original came out in late 2021, during the midst of the COVID pandemic and during Warner Bros. Pictures’ day-and-date release strategy on HBO Max – thus many didn’t get to see the first on the big screen.
Now, “Dune: Part Two” is being lined up as a potential saviour of the cinema after a disastrously quiet start to a box office this year hampered by delays due to last year’s strikes.
The “Dune” re-release is also giving way to Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” which will be re-launched in theaters this week for a week-long run.
“Dune: Part Two” is set to open in cinemas on March 1st.
