Jonathan van Tulleken has been set to direct and executive produce the first two episodes of Amazon Prime Video’s sci-fi series “Blade Runner 2099”.
The TV veteran is coming off directing the first two episodes of FX’s lavish new mini-series adaptation of James Clavell’s “Shogun” which has just landed a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score from nearly two dozen reviews ahead of its premiere next week.
Tulleken replaces Jeremy Podeswa who was originally set to direct but had to step away due to scheduling conflicts after the writer’s strike impacted the show’s production schedule.
Ridley Scott’s Scott Free and “The Expanse” producers Alcon Entertainment are behind the project which was in pre-production for months at Belfast Harbour Studios early in 2023 before the writer’s strike halted work on the series.
Filming was thus pushed back a full year with an April 2024 start now on the cards. The entire production has reportedly exited Belfast and has since set up shop in Prague where Apple TV+ lavish sci-fi series “Foundation” is about to shoot its third season.
The limited series marks the third major instalment in the franchise following Ridley Scott’s original 1982 film “Blade Runner” and Denis Villeneuve’s 2017 sequel “Blade Runner 2049”.
Silka Luisa (“Shining Girls”) wrote the script and is the showrunner on the series with an executive producer credit. Scott, Michael Green, Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson, Ben Roberts, David W. Zucker, Clayton Krueger, Cynthia Yorkin, Frank Giustra, Isa Dick Hackett, Tom Spezialy and Richard Sharkey all executive produce.
