By Ridley Scott is in negotiations to direct a high-profile, untitled Bee Gees biopic currently on the fast track at Paramount Pictures according to Deadline.
Scott will also produce alongside Michael Pruss, Graham King and Stacey Snider. Surviving Bee Gee member Barry Gibb is executive producing.
Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb first began performing in the late 1950s, but they hit the big time writing songs for the film “Saturday Night Fever” which fueled the popularity of disco. The band has celebrated worldwide sales of more than 220 million records.
They are still one of the biggest-selling groups of all time with iconic songs including “Stayin’ Alive,” “More Than a Woman,” “Tragedy,” “How Deep is Your Love,” “To Love Somebody,” “Jive Talkin’,” “Night Fever,” “Words,” “You Win Again,” “I Started A Joke” and many more. Maurice died in 2003 and Robin in 2009.
Scott wrapped production last month on his highly-anticipated “Gladiator” sequel and early footage has reportedly blown away the studio brass.
Paramount quickly got the script by John Logan (“Skyfall,” “The Last Samurai”) for the Bee Gees film in front of Scott, aided heavily by Logan having worked with Scott on both the original “Gladiator” and “Alien: Covenant”.
Scott also has a long-standing link to the band, their longtime manager Robert Stigwood put Scott on a medieval film starring the three Gibb brothers. That didn’t come together with Scott moving on to direct his breakthrough feature “The Duelists”.
Paramount has already scored the life rights to the Gibb family estate in 2019 including rights to use their classic songs in the film.
The “Gladiator” sequel is set to hit cinemas on November 22nd. Scott’s most recent film “Napoleon,” following its theatrical run back in November, has set a March 1st launch date on the Apple TV+ service.
