Wednesday night in the UK saw “Oppenheimer” filmmaker Christopher Nolan receiving the British Film Institute Fellowship Award as part of a star-packed in-conversation event in London.
BBC presenter Francine Stock moderated the talk which covered all of Nolan’s career along with his work with various collaborators including composer Hans Zimmer, cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema and the late Heath Ledger.
Participating in the Q&A, Nolan was asked whether he would consider making a straight-up horror film to which he says he would love to do it – but he has to find a great central idea to get him onboard:
“I think horror films are very interesting because they depend on very cinematic devices, it really is about a visceral response to things and so, at some point, I’d love to make a horror film.
But I think a really good horror film requires a really exceptional idea. And those are few and far between. So I haven’t found a story that lends itself to that.
But I think it’s a very interesting genre from a cinematic point of view. It’s also one of the few genres where the studios make a lot of these films, and they are films that have a lot of bleakness, a lot of abstraction.
They have a lot of the qualities that Hollywood is generally very resistant to putting in films, but that’s a genre where it’s allowable.”
Also in attendance at the event was none other than James Bond franchise and EON Productions chief Barbara Broccoli. Speaking with Baz Bamigboye, Broccoli says the project is still years away and is effectively stalled as there’s nothing happening on it yet:
“There’s nothing I can tell you about the next Bond film. There’s nothing. Nothing is happening yet.”
Broccoli’s attendance was not lost on UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak who included her in a gag he made at the event.
