Emmy winner and Oscar-nominated “American Fiction” filmmaker Cord Jefferson will write and executive produce the limited series “Just Cause” starring Scarlett Johansson.
Additionally, acclaimed writer John Wells (“Watchmen,” “Succession”) has joined the project, co-writing the series with Jefferson and also serving as an executive producer. Wells remains best known for his roles as showrunner and executive producer of “ER” and “The West Wing”.
Not to be confused with the video game series of the same name, this is a new adaptation of John Katzenbach’s 1992 novel previously translated into the 1995 Southern gothic noir film starring Sean Connery, Laurence Fishburne, Kate Capshaw, Blair Underwood and Ed Harris.
The book followed journalist Matt Cowart who receives a letter from a death row inmate who claims to be innocent. As the investigation unfolds, not only does the case against the inmate prove to be shaky, but other horrors are lurking in the background.
Johansson, in her first major television role, will play a gender-swapped version of Cowart. A 10-year-old Johansson actually starred in the 1995 film as the child of the character she is now playing.
