The other day came confirmation from Disney that they had renewed their Disney+ series “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” for a second season.
Appearing at Disney’s Television Critics Association winter press tour today, executive producer Jon Steinberg has offered an update on where things stand with the show.
It seems no one is dillydallying around; they’re all back at work, and a “couple of scripts” are already being tackled as the show adapts the second of Rick Riordan’s books – “Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters”.
Executive producer Jon Steinberg also says they can’t give a timetable as yet for when the next episodes arrive:
“They [the scripts] are in really good shape. I think starting to boot up this machine again is an undertaking. There’s a lot of trains leaving the station all at the same time. But I think we’re feeling really good about creative and about how to plan for how to tell the stories.
We all feel the the demand and response from people wanting to see more of what we were doing. But we want to do it right and make sure that the second season of the show lives up to or surpasses the first.”
Executive producer Dan Shotz assures fans they’re relying heavily on the book and author Rick Riordan and his wife, executive producer Becky Riordan, to adapt the new season. He also says:
“To be honest, it’s really fun to just be back in the writers room this way. We’ll be building the story going forward, and also looking with books three and four and five…how we can bring stuff into the season to keep evolving the story.”
Steinberg adds they haven’t thought of recasting the late Lance Reddick as Zeus yet but add that “[it’s] something that we’re gonna have to deal with” and “I do not envy whoever has to step into his shoes.”
