It’s Super Bowl weekend, which doesn’t necessarily mean bad box-office in general; sometimes it’s just a suppressed Sunday haul.
This year, however, it’s grim. The sole new wide release, “Lisa Frankenstein,” took in just $1.8 million on Friday (including $700K in previews) for second place. It is expected to sit on just $4 million for the weekend – the low end of expectations – and mixed reviews paint a bleak fate for the movie.
Matthew Vaughn’s “Argylle” remains on top and is headed for a $6.6 million second weekend haul – a drop of a large 62%. Both the Jason Statham-led “The Beekeeper” and the Timothee Chalamet-led “Wonka” are headed for $3.3 million three-day hauls – competing for third and fourth place.
“The Beekeeper” has proven a success for Statham with $54.1 million domestic total so far – beating all his “Transporter,” “Crank” and “The Mechanic” movies. “Wonka” has done the same for Chalamet, its $205.2 million haul the actor’s highest-grossing film to date.
Illumination/Universal’s “Migration” will be fifth with around $3 million. The re-release of the first “Dune” in cinemas is already paying dividends with the movie taking in $570,000 on Friday screenings.
The overall box-office for the weekend is expected to fall below even the woeful $53 million the same weekend took in last year.
