FX held its Television Critics Association’s winter 2023 press tour today and confirmed several release windows for major series.
First up, they announced that the third season of “The Bear” will launch, once again with a binge drop of all episodes at once, in June. The series has been a massive hit for FX along with landing plenty of critical acclaim and awards.
They have also announced that a second season of the Jeff Bridges-led “The Old Man” will arrive in Fall this year, hitting just over two years after the first season aired in Summer 2022.
In terms of other dates the third season of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s hit sports docu-series “Welcome to Wrexham” will premiere April 18th, the second half of “American Horror Story: Delicate” will return April 3rd, the Elisabeth Moss-led spy series “The Veil” will release from April 30th, and sports scandal drama “Clipped” will commence June 4th.
FX Chairman John Landgraf was also on hand with his annual tally of adult original scripted series across U.S. broadcast, cable and streaming services.
He confirms that ‘Peak TV’ ended last year with 516 shows on the air in 2023 – down by 14% from 600 in 2022. That marks the most significant dip ever since FX started this annual tally more than two decades ago, and more than double the 7% drop caused by the pandemic’s impact on production in 2020.
He adds that while the dual strikes played a role in, the maturing streaming age and business realities surrounding it are a factor. Landgraf had originally predicted the end of Peak TV as being around 2016-2017, but later said he hadn’t forseen the streaming media explosion.
