Dwayne Johnson is reportedly in talks and looking likely to return as the voice of the god Maui in the upcoming “Moana” sequel revealed yesterday by Disney Pictures.
Disney CEO Bob Iger surprised everyone with the announcement of the film which is coming this Fall and is an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers.
After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters.
Various details were revealed from Dave Derrick Jr. directing to those involved in the music, to the fact this was originally planned as a series before being retooled as a film.
Not revealed was any kind of casting though, begging the question as to whether the original film’s voice actors Auli’i Cravalho or Dwayne Johnson would return.
According to Deadline, talks have been underway with both and with Johnson it’s “looking good”. They add Cravalho’s talks “aren’t as close as Johnsons” so it’s not as clear yet if she’s back.
Cravalho already revealed back in May on social media she won’t be reprising the role in the live-action version of the movie which was originally planned for a June 27th 2025 release.
As that film hasn’t even begun production yet it’s likely to be delayed with Disney substituting it with another film to be announced.
