By Kevin Williamson, the “Scream” and “Dawson’s Creek” writer-creator, finalised an overall deal for his Outerbanks Entertainment banner at Universal Television back in December.
Today comes word that four high-profile TV series projects are in development at the studio, two of which are remakes of iconic thrillers – Alfred Hitchcock’s 1954 feature “Rear Window” and David Fincher’s 1997 film “The Game”.
“Rear Window” will be a series reimagining and has been set up at Peacock. Presumably, it will keep a similar premise of an apartment-bound journalist who voyeuristically spies on his neighbours and appears to witness a murder. Williamson will write and executive produce alongside John Davis and John Fox.
“The Game” will see the film’s original writers John Brancato & Michael Ferris returning to adapt the Michael Douglas-led film into a series format. That project is in internal development and the least far along of the four.
The other two projects have other origins. One is an adaptation of Ruth Ware’s book “The It Girl” which will have Sarah L. Thompson co-writing alongside Williamson. It follows a woman in the search for answers a decade after her friend’s murder.
The other is the dysfunctional family crime drama “The Waterfront” which is based on an original concept about a family that owns a crumbling North Carolina fishing empire. Williamson is writing that.
Those two latter works are expected to be shopped around. Ben Fast, President of Outerbanks Entertainment, will executive produce all four titles.
