The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have announced the creation of a new competitive Oscar category for ‘Best Achievement in Casting’.
It marks the first new category created by the Academy since ‘Best Animated Feature’ in 2001 and follows on from The Casting Directors Branch being formed a decade ago and currently boasting 160 members.
Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang says in a statement:
“Casting directors play an essential role in filmmaking, and as the Academy evolves, we are proud to add casting to the disciplines that we recognize and celebrate. We congratulate our Casting Directors Branch members on this exciting milestone and their commitment and diligence throughout this process.”
Casting directors have been fighting for awards recognition since the 1990s. The new award will start being handed out at the 98th annual ceremony in early 2026 awarding films released in 2025.
Recent times have seen a big push for a ‘Best Stunts’ Oscar which still sadly hasn’t been announced. The 96th Oscars will take place Sunday, March 10th.
