After many years, the follow-up to 1997 comedy “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion” appears to be picking up steam.
Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow starred in the film about two women who try and impress their former classmates by making up fake careers – namely that they invented Post-its.
The project was directed by David Mirkin from a screenplay by writer-producer Robin Schiff who also wrote the script for Patrick Dempsey-led comedy “Loverboy” and served as producer on numerous shows from “Lipstick Jungle” to “Uncoupled”.
In a recent interview with Us magazine (via Deadline), Oscar winner Sorvino confirms that Schiff is returning to write the film – but her work on the Lily Collins-led Netflix series “Emily in Paris” is keeping her from finishing:
“She’s currently working on Emily in Paris, so she’s finishing up her draft to present to the studio. Lisa [Kudrow] and I are wrapping up our deals as executive producers on it with the studio. We’re full force ahead.”
Sorvino also says she wants the characters “to be as relatable, but also as dumb and lovable as they ever were”. Janeane Garofalo, Alan Cumming, Julia Campbell, Vincent Ventresca, Elaine Hendrix, Justin Theroux and Camryn Manheim also starred in the original.
Schiff also wrote and directed “Romy and Michele: In the Beginning,” a telemovie prequel for ABC Family starring Katherine Heigl and Alexandra Breckenridge.
