Back To Black is Sam Taylor-Johnson’s long-gestating biopic about British singer Amy Winehouse. The project is set up at Studiocanal and Focus Features. Now a full trailer has dropped.
Marisa Abela will both act and sing as Winehouse. The movie tells the story of her rise to fame in London in the early 2000s, her place in the Camden music scene and, eventually, her struggles and her demons.
Winehouse and Taylor-Johnson first met and became friends within the music scene and creative surge of the early 2000s. When Winehouse passed away in 2011 she was one of the most popular music stars on the planet, with 30 million album sales and frequently leading the streaming data from a channel that was still in its infancy. She was also featured as one of the 100 greatest women in music in various rankings.
Her fame and success couldn’t save her. She had struggled with mental illness all her life, and this gave way to substance abuse and addiction. She sang about this in her famous hit Rehab. She tragically died from alcohol poisoning on 23 July 2011, at the age of just 27.
Taylor-Johnson directs from a script by Matt Greenhalgh (Control). The project is sanctioned by her estate, Universal Music Group, and Sony Music Publishing.
Jack O’Connell co-stars Back To Black which will open in the UK on April 12th and in the U.S. on May 17th.
