Disney is reportedly considering giving its Daisy Ridley-led film “Young Woman and the Sea” a theatrical release following highly successful test screenings.
The project, directed by Joachim Rønning (“Kon-Tiki,” “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil”) was originally planned for a direct to Disney+ release when it was announced back in 2020.
However, Deadline reports that the film scored in the high 90s with test audiences. The result is a consideration of a May 31st theatrical release followed by a campaign during the Summer Olympics 2024 to push the Disney+ release of the title.
With the film going from streaming to theatrical, some deal elements still reportedly need to be worked out. It will follow in the wake of George Clooney’s “The Boys in the Boat” which grossed over $45 million at the box-office for Amazon MGM Studios.
The story is based on the book by Glenn Stout and chronicles the daring journey of Gertrude ‘Trudy’ Ederle, the daughter of a German butcher from Manhattan and competitive swimmer who won gold in the 1924 Olympics.
Then she decided to attempt crossing the English Channel, the first woman to ever swim across the 21 mile stretch of sea which she did in 1926.
Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Stephen Graham, Christopher Eccleston and Jeanette Hain co-star. Jeff Nathanson penned the script while Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman are producing.
Rønning is currently filming the third “TRON” film for Disney, whilst Ridley is gearing up for another “Star Wars” film which will start production at a later date.
