The second season of Korean drama sensation “Squid Game” will air sometime this year.
In an investor letter sent out after its quarterly financial report today, the streaming giant touted its 2024 slate and confirmed that second seasons of “Squid Game,” “The Diplomat” and “Empress” will all arrive this year along with the third season of “Bridgerton” which is already set for mid-year.
The new run will arrive around three years after the first debuted on Netflix on September 17th and became a global phenomenon – pulling in over 1.65 billion viewing hours in 28 days.
It became Netflix’s first series to surpass being watched by 100 million members at launch, and to this day remains the most-watched series ever on Netflix.
Expected back are Lee Jung-jae as Seong Gi-hun, Lee Byung-hun as the black masked Front Man, Wi Ha-jun as police detective Hwang Jun-ho, and Gong Yoo as the recruiter.
New cast include Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-Neul, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Park Gyu-young, Jo Yu-ri, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Lee Jin-uk , Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won and Won Ji-an.
Hwang Dong-hyuk is returning to direct and executive produce the second season of the series that will start production shortly, thus an airing isn’t likely until close to year’s end.
The news comes as Netflix has reported 13 million new subscribers for the last quarter of last year – the second-best quarter ever for subscriber sign-ups behind only Q1 2020 when the pandemic began.
