Last year came word that filmmaker McG said he was very open to returning to direct a third “Charlie’s Angels” film – following up the 2000 original and its 2003 sequel.
The films took in over $520 million at the worldwide box office and the first film in particular has only grown in estimation since its release with a lot of praise for the film.
Its trio of stars have moved on – Drew Barrymore is now hosting television, Diaz has effectively retired from the business but did recently pop back in for “Back in Action,” and Liu is still out there a working actress popping up in various projects.
That includes Steven Soderbergh’s new film “Presence” which she leads and which is premiering at Sundance this week. Speaking with Variety at Park City, Liu was asked if a third chapter is possible and from the sounds of it she doesn’t think it’ll ever happen:
“I honestly don’t know how that’s going to be feasible. There have been so many iterations, even after the fact…in some ways, it’s such a strange thing to think about it because times have changed so much since that first one.
I mean at that time, when we were doing publicity, they had never before had three women on a magazine cover. They didn’t even know how to do it.
It was such a strange thing for women to collaborate and be seen as colleagues and friends. It was such a big moment in time, and now it’s shifted.
Even when I was doing ‘Ally McBeal,’ there had never been a lead woman in that way. There was Mary Tyler Moore and things like that, but the focus has changed.
I’m not in charge of that, but I always enjoy the time that I have and then I move on. I never really dwell on anything like that. But I really would be shocked if that happened.”
Julia Fox, Chris Sullivan, Callina Lang, Eddy Maday, and West Mulholland co-star in “Presence” which follows a family that moves into a suburban house and becomes convinced they’re not alone.
