Taylor Swift is a one-woman force of nature, an entertainer, a business, and apparently the Messiah of white women worldwide. She is also the subject of some rather feverish speculation from her fans, the legions of “Switfies” already on their one way ticket to cat ownership and a Mumsnet account. This involves Argylle.
The upcoming movie follows Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard), an agoraphobic, introverted spy novelist. Through her work on her books, she finds herself in a world of real spies and threats.
Scenes from Conway’s new novel play within the movie, with characters played by Henry Cavill and Dua Lipa. The movie itself is based on a book by an author called Elly Conway, and the real identity of Elly Conway remains a mystery.
Taylor Swift fans have become convinced it’s her. The reason? She wears argyle sweaters and the film features a Scottish Fold cat. Swift owns two of these cats.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, director Matthew Vaughn shut down those rumors:
“I’m not a big internet guy, and it was actually my daughter who came up to me – this is the power of celebrity and the internet – and said, ‘You never told me Taylor wrote the book!’ an I’m looking at her going, ‘What are you talking about Taylor Swift wrote the book? She didn’t write the book!’ And I was laughing because I was like, ‘It’s not true! She didn’t write the book!’ But my daughter was convinced of it.
There is a real book … and it’s a really good book, and there is an Elly Conway who wrote the book, but it’s not Taylor Swift. And I say that because I imagine Taylor Swift has a load of people trying to jump on her bandwagon left, right, and center. I don’t want to be a part of that club. I did read the conspiracies and I was like, ‘Wow, they don’t leave a stone unturned!’ But it’s not Taylor Swift. She definitely didn’t write the book.”
He did admit that there has been some Taylor Swift influence in his life. It led to their own Scottish Fold cat at home:
“Ironically, what she is responsible for is the Scottish Fold. I got home one day, it was Christmas, and I was like, ‘What the f— is that noise?’ And I’m running around the house and I hear a noise, and the kids had seen a Taylor Swift documentary and there was a Scottish Fold in that, and they’d persuaded my wife, Claudia [Schiffer], to get them the kitten for Christmas. It was bought without my permission and hidden from me.”
Argylle features Sam Rockwell, Samuel L. Jackson, John Cena, Ariana DeBose, Bryan Cranston, Rob Delaney, and Catherine O’Hara as co-stars. It opens in theaters on February 2nd.
