Paramount Pictures’ “Mean Girls” musical sung its way to an $11.65 million opening day (including previews) at the U.S. box-office yesterday.
As a result, estimates are the film is on track for a three-day weekend of $27.5 million and a four-day MLK holiday weekend haul of $31.5 million – even with harsh weather leading to some cinema closures.
That’s a very strong start for a movie skewering so heavily female (73%), and is on par with 2017’s “Girls Trip”. The number also handily beats the original 2004 “Mean Girls” which opened to $24.4 million in its three-day haul.
The question now is if the film will have staying power in the way “Wonka” has, or will it quickly sink in the way “The Color Purple” did. The film’s ‘B’ CinemaScore, unfortunately, probably means the latter.
The Jason Statham-led “The Beekeeper” came in second with a solid $6.7 million on Friday and a B+ CinemaScore. It’s headed for a $16.8 million regular three-day and $19.2 million four-day holiday weekend opening.
Rounding out the top five are “Wonka” at $7.6 million/$10.3 million (three-day/four-day), “Anyone But You” at $7.5 million/$9.3 million (three-day/four-day) and “Migration” at $5.2 million/$6.8 million (three-day/four-day).
What’s not fairing so well is the Biblical comedy “The Book of Clarence” starring LaKeith Stanfield. Faith-based audiences are ignoring that $40 million budgeted film which debuted to just $1 million on Friday and is headed for a $2.6 million three-day and $3 million four-day haul – putting it in tenth place.
Also not faring well is “Night Swim” which plummeted 78% in its second weekend and will come in seventh with $4 million for the three-day and $4.7 million for the four-day.
Also not faring well is Disney’s re-release of Pixar’s “Soul” which is tracking for just $516,000 over the four-day weekend.
Finally, “Godzilla Minus One” has passed the $50 million domestic and $100 million international marks. It has become the highest-grossing Japanese language live action or animated movie ever released in the U.S./Canada. It is also the fifth-highest grossing non-English language film at the U.S. domestic box-office.
