Even with a TV-MA rating, Marvel Studios’ “Echo” has already topped the streaming charts this week over on both the Disney+ and Hulu platforms – though the studio has yet to put out numbers for the show.
However it marks just the start of more adult fare coming from Marvel this year. The R-rated “Deadpool 3” will mark the studio’s sole film opening in 2024, and recently it was confirmed the animated series “Marvel Zombies” is going for a TV-MA rating.
Speaking about the latter, producer Bryan Andrews tells the Phase Zero podcast that fans should not expect “Marvel Zombies” to follow its source material. Instead, they are planning their own take on the story – one more of a spin-off to an episode of “What If?”:
“That’s going to be crazy. Yeah, [it’s] full TV-MA. It’s spawning off of what was done on Episode [105]. The notion was, there’s some inspiration from the comic, the fact that they’re zombies, but we’re not doing the comic, like, in any stretch.
We have our own take on it, and a lot of that stuff has been set up by our talented [What If…?] writers early on, so, just taking that and… exploring that mythology in that episode a bit more. So, yeah, it’s crazy.”
The show sees the Marvel heroes battle against an ever-spreading zombie outbreak. Andrews is directing the animated series from a screenplay written by Zeb Wells who is also serving as an executive producer.
Iman Vellani has previously indicated her Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel character has a central role in the series.
