Christian Bale, Annette Benning, Penelope Cruz, Jessie Buckley and Peter Skarsgaard are all set to star in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s latest directing effort “The Bride” at Warner Bros. Pictures.
Bale has been circling the project for months, a remake of James Whale’s iconic classic “Bride of Frankenstein,” however the strikes prevented any deals from being made until recently. The project marks Gyllenhaal’s second directorial effort following 2021’s psychological drama “The Lost Daughter”.
The original 1935 film was a direct sequel to 1931’s “Frankenstein” and is widely considered the better film. Elsa Lanchester starred in the dual role of Mary Shelley and the eponymous character opposite Boris Karloff as The Monster.
In the new film, a lonely Dr. Frankenstein travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the aide of a Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two reinvigorate a murdered young woman and the Bride is born.
She is beyond what either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police and a wild and radical social movement.
Gyllenhaal plans to start shooting filming before end of March ahead of a 2025 release. Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Talia Kleinhendler and Osnant Handelsman-Keren produce.
