By Veteran British TV director Toby Haynes, who helmed the “USS Callister” episode of “Black Mirror” and the prison-set episodes of the first season of “Andor,” is coming to the world of “Star Trek”.
Paramount Pictures has reportedly hired him to direct a new theatrical release film in the series which J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot is producing and which has Seth Grahame-Smith as writer.
Story details are under wraps but this is separate from a fourth and final chapter in the main Abrams-produced series of films that starred Chris Pine in the Captain Kirk role. That project is said to still be in “active development”.
Instead, Haynes’ film is being described as an “origin story” that takes place decades before the original 2009 “Star Trek” film. Those films unfold in the late 2250s/early 2260s which would suggest this will unfold in the late 22nd/early 23rd century – a period of history in the Trek universe never really tackled before.
The film will mark the first in the franchise since 2016’s “Star Trek Beyond”, though at least one direct-to-streaming movie is on the way with the Michelle Yeoh-led “Section 31” film expected to begin production at month’s end in Canada.
The franchise recently wrapped its “Picard” series after three seasons, has a fifth and final season of “Star Trek: Discovery” on the way which will premiere at SXSW, and has new seasons of both “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” and “Star Trek: Lower Decks” in production.
