Marvel Studios released all five episodes of its “Echo” limited series on the Disney+ service last night and so far reviews are mixed/positive and quite divided.
With 50 reviews counted on Rotten Tomatoes, the series sits at 70% (6.5/10) with critics and 73% (3.8/5) with audiences. It’s not hugely different at Metacritic where it stands at 61/100 with critics and 7.4/10 with audiences.
A common criticism of the show is that there are two shows here – a grounded character-driven crime drama and a Marvel show with the former easily coming out on top.
MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD FOR “ECHO”
One thing the series does do is seemingly incorporate Netflix’s “Daredevil” into canon. Viewers confirm Charlie Cox’s Daredevil wears a costume identical to his one in the Netflix series.
In addition, Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin appears to have the same backstory as his character in the Netflix series. The series also uses the Kingpin for a post-credits stinger which sets up next year’s “Daredevil: Born Again” series.
In the stinger, he’s flying back to New York City on a private jet when he’s watching a broadcast about there being no clear frontrunner in the city’s Mayoral election.
The news host discussing the race says the ideal candidate would be an “outsider” and “bare-knuckled brawler” who is “not afraid to take on the establishment” as Kingpin leans forward listening.
