Lucasfilm finally seems to have a rough plan for where it is going in terms of “Star Wars” movies after a chaotic few years.
Yesterday saw the surprise announcement of “The Mandalorian and Grogu” movie being the first “Star Wars” film on the big screen since “The Rise of Skywalker”.
That followed last year’s announcement of three films to be directed by James Mangold, Dave Filoni and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
Outside of that though, numerous filmmakers like Shawn Levy, Taika Waititi and even Rian Johnson still remain linked to developing “Star Wars” films.
One that is definitely dead is the one from “Game of Thrones” showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. The pair were linked to a proposed new trilogy at one time, but exited whilst it was still in development and the project was scrapped.
In a new interview with THR to promote their epic new sci-fi series “3 Body Problem” on Netflix, explained what their project would’ve been about:
Benioff: “We wanted to do ‘The First Jedi’. Basically how the Jedi Order came to be, why it came to be, the first lightsaber.”
Weiss: “And we were annoyed as hell when [Rian Johnson, the duo’s longtime friend and ‘3BP’ producer] called his movie ‘The Last Jedi.’ He completely destroyed the obvious title for what we were working on.
Benioff: “[Lucasfilm] ended up not wanting to do a ‘First Jedi’ story. We had a very specific story idea in mind, and ultimately they decided they didn’t want to do that. And we totally get it. It’s their company and their IP, but we weren’t the droids they were looking for.”
Speculation was rife at the time the pair were working on a potential adaptation of the celebrated “Knights of the Old Republic” video game, but from the sounds of it this would’ve gone back further.
Lucasfilm is still pursuing the idea to some extent though as Mangold’s film “Dawn of the Jedi” is expected to tackle that era. Meanwhile “3 Body Problem” arrives on Netflix on March 21st.
