Comedian Jo Koy hosted the 81st Golden Globe Awards on Sunday with the reviews for his MC duties being mostly quite negative.
Koy’s monologue lost the room early on including jokes about “Barbie” that mocked women, movie runtime, even berating the audience for being silent.
One joke that landed with a thud involved Taylor Swift, who was in the room and kept a straight face.
Appearing on “Good Morning America” on Monday morning to discuss how the night went down, Koy acknowledged it didn’t go well:
“It’s a tough room. It was a hard job, I’m not going to lie…I’d be lying if [I said] it doesn’t hurt. I hit a moment there where I was like, ‘Ah.’
Hosting is just a tough gig. Yes, I’m a stand-up comic but that hosting position it’s a different style. I kind of went in and did the writer’s thing. We had ten days to write this monologue. It was a crash course. I feel bad, but I got to still say I loved what I did.”
Koy adds that he’s unsure if he’d host another award show, and he feels bad about not being able to show more of himself: “I wanted to give a little bit more of me, and I fell a little short. That’s all.”
Whilst his was a poor performance, the broadcast was not with the ceremony pulling in.9.4 million total viewers in overnight ratings according to Nielsen – jumping 50% from 2023’s performance.
