Potentially controversial opinion… but I think The Omen might just edge out The Exorcist in the horror movie rankings. It also makes me realize it has been a while, so I might be due a rewatch of the trilogy. Now, 20th Century Studios has released the first trailer for The First Omen. This is a horror-thriller that serves as a prequel to Richard Donner’s 1976 original and the two sequels. We ignore that 4th movie in the hope it will go away.

Arkasha Stevenson directs the new film. It will follow a young American woman who is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the church. She encounters a darkness that causes her to question her own faith, and uncovers a terrifying conspiracy that hopes to bring about the birth of evil incarnate.

Nell Tiger Free, Tawfeek Barhom, Sonia Braga, Ralph Ineson, and Bill Nighy make up the cast. Stevenson, Tim Smith, and Keith Thomas wrote the script from a story by Ben Jacoby with David S. Goyer and Keith Levine producing.

The Omen is now regarded as a classic horror movie. The chilling tale of an American ambassador who comes to believe his adopted five-year-old son is the second coming of the Antichrist was remade in 2006, with the remake being not too bad at all. There was also a single season of a Damien TV series.

The First Omen is set for theatrical release on April 5th, 2024.
