A couple of hours ahead of the Christmas special’s premiere, the official “Doctor Who” YouTube channel has posted a new clip showcasing actor Ncuti Gatwa’s first day on the set.
The clip showcases his arrival in the last of the 60th anniversary specials which aired the other week, along with filming his very first scenes involving him acting in a shirt and underwear as the new Fifteenth Doctor opposite David Tennant’s Fourteenth Doctor.
The actor recently spoke with Collider and revealed he also scored some great advice from the Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith:
“It’s such a prestigious role, and as actors you want to do your best by it. You’ll beat yourself up if you don’t feel like you have. And so I remember doing that throughout Season 1, just being like, ‘I just feel like I’m ruining it all.’ Talking to Matt about it, Matt was like, ‘I was exactly the same. I just felt like every day I was so hard on myself and felt like I wasn’t doing a good enough job, but trust me, you are. If they say that you are, then you are,’ and like, ‘I know the role means a lot to you and you want to do your best by it, but also remember to enjoy it.’”
Meanwhile, the show’s production designer Phil Sims spoke with Games Radar and revealed that the addition of a jukebox to the TARDIS, first glimpsed in the final 60th Anniversary special, isn’t just for show.
Showrunner Russell T Davies reportedly requested the inclusion of a jukebox and says the series has utilized the device multiple times with musical moments playing key elements across at least one episode:
“The idea is that the Wurlitzer is the hatstand of Tom Baker’s TARDIS, so it’s where there’s been a very carefully chosen bit of furniture or ephemera. Russell asked for it. He thought about it. We talked about hatstands, we talked about all sorts of things. We tried different chairs, wingback chairs, all sorts of different chairs or sofas, or bits and pieces.
There’s no hatstand – the hatstand didn’t make the cut. But the jukebox did. I don’t know how far ahead he was thinking. But the music’s been a recurring thing, we’ve used the jukebox quite a lot. Music has been really important in this series, certainly since Ncuti’s been the Doctor. I think they’ve all been chosen very carefully. There are some that are deliberately there for the plot.”
The “Doctor Who” Christmas special titled “The Church on Ruby Road” airs on the evening of Christmas Day in the UK and is expected to include a promo trailer for what’s to come in 2024.
