Filming is back underway on the sequel to the 2021 live-action “Mortal Kombat” film and the film’s producer Todd Garner has teased the return of Scorpion/Hanzo Hasashi in the film.

The image shows Scorpion’s weapon on the set in front of a blue screen, indicating though the character is returning it’s not clear if actor Hiroyuki Sanada is also back in the role as he’s not shown in this shot.

The 2021 film saw Scorpion and his nemesis Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim) were engaged in an epic confrontation, but Sanada had previously suggested that he and Scorpion might not return for the follow-up saying “I hope so” when asked if he would be returning.

Filming on this follow-up to 2021’s “Mortal Kombat” game-to-film adaptation is taking place in Queensland, Australia with New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures backing the project.

It started its shoot in late June but was halted after just a few days due to the actor’s strike. Production resumed mid-November just days after the strike ended.

Simon McQuoid directs the new film from a screenplay written by “Moon Knight” head writer Jeremy Slater. Almost all the main cast from the first film are back, including scene-stealer Josh Lawson as Kano despite his apparent on-screen death.

Also back are Joe Taslim as Bi-Han/Sub-Zero, Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Max Huang as Kung Lao, and Chin Han as Shang Tsung.

They will be joined by Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, CJ. Bloomfield as Baraka, Martyn Ford as Emperor Shao Kahn, Damon Herriman as Quan Chi, Desmond Chiam as Edenian King Jerrod and Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel.
