Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh left “Star Trek: Discovery” during its third season and is one of the more in-demand actresses out there for projects.
A “Section 31” spin-off, led by her Emperor Phillipa Georgiou character from ‘Discovery,’ had long been suggested even before her exit but seemed unlikely in the wake of her awards win.
Then, surprisingly, it was revealed it was not only happening but had been retooled as a direct-to-streaming movie for Paramount+ and Yeoh was committed to star.
Producer Alex Kurtzman previously revealed back at New York Comic Con that Yeoh is behind the project “with all her power” and this week, promoting Netflix’s “The Brothers Sun,” Yeoh tells Collider she’s all geared up and ready to shoot:
“I just came back from Toronto, and what does that tell you? We are definitely prepping. We are definitely going full steam ahead. And thank you. Section 31 is very special to me, and I’m so happy we’re doing it.”
The series will follow Georgiou and her exploits in Starfleet’s black-ops division which was first introduced in “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine”.
A potential air date is unknown, but it will certainly be after the fifth and final season of “Star Trek: Discovery” which returns in April. Production on the film is expected to overlap somewhat with filming on the third season of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds”.
