By The Timothee Chalamet-led musical prequel “Wonka” scored an opening day domestic gross of $14.4 million on Friday, leading to a revision of its opening weekend box-office projections.
Pegged at $35 million earlier this week, those numbers are now going up to $38 million with some suggesting as high as $40 million – a very promising start.
Helping things along is the solid A- CinemaScore from general audiences, with younger audiences giving it an A (under 25s) and an A+ (under 18s).
Its numbers are being boosted by a strong surge in young people with most ticket buyers aged 18-34. It’s a film that aims to stick around through the holidays and so could have staying power.
Coming in second will be “The Hunger Games: Songbirds & Snakes” which continues its soft drop-off – down just 35% in its fifth week – with a further $6 million and a total of $145.4 million so far.
The acclaimed double Japanese sensations of Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron” and Toho’s “Godzilla Minus One” will battle it out for third with around $5 million each.
‘Heron’ saw a big drop in its second weekend with 62% whilst ‘Godzilla’ fell 42% in its third weekend. The films have made $22.9 million and $34.1 million respectively thus far.
“Trolls Band Together” and “Wish” will take fifth and sixth with $4 million and $3.2 million respectively.
