Paramount Pictures and John Krasinski have revealed the first trailer for his new movie called IF (which stands for Imaginary Friends) starring Ryan Reynolds and Cailey Fleming.

IF is written and directed by Krasinski and tells the story of a young girl who goes through a difficult experience and begins to see everyone’s imaginary friends who have been left behind as their real-life friends have grown up.

The movie features an embarrassment of riches when it comes to talent. Steve Carell voices the big purple IF that you see throughout the trailer. We also have Krasinski himself, his missus Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Steve Carell, Sam Rockwell, Fiona Shaw, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Maya Rudolph, Christopher Meloni, Richard Jenkins, Bobby Moynihan, and Louis Gossett Jr. Gatecrashing the party of talented people are Jon Stewart and Awkwafina, but you can’t have your cake and eat it, kids!

Krasinski says the film is made for his kids and explains via Collider:

IF is a movie that I made for my kids because I don’t think they’re allowed to see ‘A Quiet Place’. Emily calls it PG-40, ‘You’ll get to see it when you’re 40!’ So I had to make a movie that they could see, and I’m really, really excited about it.

For me, it was just about what if we could tell a story about these time capsules. Imaginary friends are adorable and all those things, but they’re also time capsules of your hopes, dreams, and ambitions when you were the most fertile of a brain, and it never goes away. I think we’re told that we’re adults instead of what if you realize that you never stopped being a kid.”

This is one of those films where wish my kids were still kids because this looks like good old-fashioned family fun. However, at the beginning of the trailer when it says “From the imagination of John Krasinski” I can’t help but cough, cough, Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, cough.

IF hits cinemas on May 17th 2024.
