If there’s one common complaint from filmmakers about doing Superman for either film and television, it’s a question of how do make someone who is essentially invulnerable and often such a good guy into someone interesting on screen.

Various writers and filmmakers have taken different approaches to the character – be it an alien immigrant, Jesus allegory, aspirational mythological figure, or even a nihilistic God.

We know James Gunn’s upcoming “Superman: Legacy” is said to revert back to an old school approach for the character, an idealistic boy scout, with visual inspiration from the “All-Star Superman” comic (but not a story adaptation as that comic deals with a dying Supes).

David Corenswet, who will be playing Clark Kent/Superman himself, has his own idea about the character and seems to think that the quality that makes him so difficult to decode is the character’s defining trait. He tells EW:

“The cool thing about Superman is the thing that everybody says is the problem with the character, which is that he’s invincible. That’s the most interesting thing [about] him. What a difficult position for a person to be in. There’s so much to be mined there, and deal with the drama that’s inherent in somebody who doesn’t have any problems and can’t die.”

A few have been able to add layers whilst keeping the core character intact, most notably the animated incarnation in the 1990s “Superman: The Animated Series” and “Justice League” cartoons.

Can Gunn do so? We’ll find out when “Superman: Legacy” is set for cinema release on July 11th 2025.
