Gareth Edwards’ ambitious science fiction adventure “The Creator” has set its SVOD date with the film coming to Hulu on December 20th.
That marks a jump to SVOD just three months after the film’s release in cinemas in mid-late September. The standalone sci-fi original feature famously boasts the look of a $200 million movie done on frugal economics of just $80 million.
It doesn’t require any previous viewings, is not tied to any existing franchise, and isn’t even an adaptation of a famous property like a book or game. Edwards has also already indicated that there are no plans for sequels and it is a “completely self-contained story”.
The film explores the idea of AI and how the world would look if it became divided on the use of that technology. Joshua Taylor (John David Washington) is assigned a mission during the war between humanity and artificial intelligence.
If he fails, human life on Earth will cease to exist. However, nothing could have prepared him for what happens next. The film was released at the heart of the actor’s strike and sadly earned only $104 million at the global box-office.
Reviews were good but soft, heaping praise upon the film’s visuals, direction and action but heavily criticising its writing and themes. Audiences were a bit muted on it with a B+ CinemaScore.
