Former “American Hustle” co-stars Bradley Cooper and Christian Bale will reunite with that film’s producer Chuck Roven and writer Eric Warren Singer for “Best of Enemies” at Atlas Entertainment.
The project is an adaptation of Eric Dezenhall and Gus Russo’s book “Best of Enemies: The Last Great Spy Story of the Cold War.”
Set during the waning days of the Cold War, the story follows a CIA case officer Jack Platt (Cooper) and KGB agent Gennady Vasilenko (Bale) who were new arrivals to Washington D.C. in 1978.
Their respective agencies assigned each man to try and convince the other to betray his country – but the pair ended up becoming unlikely friends.
Years later they helped discover the Soviet mole Robert Hanssen together and solved several other high-profile espionage mysteries.
Several studios and distributors are reportedly circling the package with a bidding war expected to follow. Netflix and Apple are reportedly considered the frontrunners.
The report adds that Cooper could end up directing this depending on the script.
Cooper most recently produced, co-wrote, directed and starred in the Leonard Bernstein biopic “Maestro” whilst Bale is currently in cinemas voicing Shoichi Maki in Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron”.
