Pixar’s “Soul,” “Luca” and “Turning Red” are all set to get theatrical releases according to THR.
All three films, which bypassed the big screen and went straight to Disney+ because of the pandemic – will be coming to cinemas across early next year duing the quieter first quarter of the year.
Pete Doctor’s Oscar-winning 2020 film “Soul” will be released in cinemas on January 12th. Domee Shi’s 2022 Oscar-nominated “Turning Red” will arrive on February 9th. Finally, Enrico Casarosa’s 2021 Oscar-nominated seaside tale “Luca” will hit on March 22nd.
The short films “SparkShort Burrow,” “SparkShort Kitbull” and “For the Birds” will precede the films respectively.
Pixar’s first post-pandemic theatrical release was notable flop “Lightyear” in mid-2022 followed by this year’s slow burning success “Elemental”. The studio has the highly anticipated “Inside Out 2” coming next year.
With a slowdown in family films next year due to the strikes, Disney saw this as an opportunity to give the films theatrical releases and also prime the audience for “Inside Out 2”.
The studio is also trying to turn around a perception of Pixar films going straight to streaming due to those aforementioned pandemic releases.
