Former Monty Python member and legendary filmmaker Terry Gilliam has revealed he wants Johnny Depp to play Satan in his new film “Carnival at the End of Days”.

The film is reportedly being co-written by Gilliam and a yet-to-be-announced scriptwriter in their early thirties. The film is said to be at an early stage, but the “12 Monkeys” and “Time Bandits” helmer indicates he’s confident in it happening.

Gilliam revealed the news whilst in attendance at the Red Sea Film Festival on Sunday for retro screenings of the documentaries “Lost in La Mancha” and “He Dreams of Giants” which document his attempts to make “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote”.

Appearing on stage with Lucy Darwin, who produced those documentaries, Gilliam described his new project (via Variety) thus:

“This is a simple tale of God wiping out humanity for f—- up his beautiful garden Earth.

There’s only one character who’s trying to save humanity and that’s Satan, because without humanity he’s lost his job and he’s an eternal character and so to live without a job is terrible.

So he finds some young people and he tries to convince God that these young people are the new Adam and Eve. God still gets to wipe out humanity. It’s a comedy.”

Gilliam previously worked with Depp several times including on “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” and “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”.

2018’s “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote” remains the only film Gilliam has directed in the past decade.
