“The Marvels” looks to officially be the lowest-grossing installment in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe according to Variety.

The trade indicates that in a note to press sent out today, Disney reportedly said: “With ‘The Marvels’ box office now winding down, we will stop weekend reporting of international/global grosses on this title.”

The film has been out in cinemas for four weeks and has racked up $80 million in North America and $197 million worldwide. The film isn’t leaving cinemas entirely yet and is expected to play through New Year’s.

However the memo suggests the studio isn’t expecting any sort of box-office comeback. Certainly no chance of the movie beating 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk” which previously had the lowest MCU record with $264 million – not adjusted for inflation.

“The Marvels” fell to eleventh place on the domestic box-office charts this weekend with just $2.4 million – a long drop from its soft $46 million start back on November 10th which saw a disastrous 78% drop in its second weekend.

It’s a remarkable drop considering “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” which scored worse reviews, released earlier this year and still managed to gross $476 million worldwide.

It’s also not expected to cross the $100 million mark at the domestic box office – a far cry from 2019’s “Captain Marvel” which snagged $153 million in its domestic opening weekend alone ahead of a $426.8 million domestic and $1.13 billion worldwide gross.

Disney’s CEO Bob Iger addressed the film’s poor performance last week, putting it down to a lack of executive supervision on set.

No word on a potential PVOD or Disney+ release at present. Disney has previously opted to release titles, such as ‘Quantumania’, on PVOD approximately 60 days after release and on Disney+ approximately 90 days after release.
