Will Smith has confirmed the sequel to his 2007 sci-fi film adaptation of Richard Matheson’s legendary work “I Am Legend” is moving forward – and he has a co-star.
The original film is set years after a plague kills most of humanity and transforms the rest into monsters, with a sole immune survivor (Will Smith) in New York City.
Francis Lawrence directed the film which grossed $585 million worldwide, including $256 million in North America.
Speaking at an in-conversation session at Red Sea International Film Festival in Saudi Arabia (via Screen Daily), Smith spoke about the sequel and says:
“I have a call with Michael B. Jordan tomorrow. The script just came in… I’m probably giving away too much information.”
He adds that while his character Robert Neville dies at the end of the first film, the DVD extras contained an alternative ending where the character survived. He confirms the sequel will exist in that world:
“We’re going with the mythology of the DVD version where my character lived. I can’t tell you any more but Michael B. Jordan is in and we’re doing it.”
Lawrence, out promoting “The Hunger Games” prequel recently, says “I Am Legend 2” is one of several projects on his agenda along with a sequel to 2005’s “Constantine,” an adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Long Walk” and an adaptation of the “BioShock” video game series.
