As part of a Vanity Fair first look, the very first images from Amazon’s much anticipated live-action TV series adaptation of the Fallout video game franchise have landed.

In the new series, a nuclear war breaks out across Earth in the year 2077, right in the era of robots, hovercars, and a deep and abiding nostalgia for the America of the 1940s. So in the ruins of the world, everything from the clothes, to the entertainment, to the vehicles mimics that look. This retro-futurist aesthetic made the game famous. So what about the TV show?

Mass extinction in this throwback world was the starting point for the writers, Westworld creators, and husband and wife team Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. The story is set 219 years after the war and follows Lucy (played by Yellowjackets star Ella Purnell) who has lived her entire life inside a subterranean vault, where every need and want has been satisfied while generations and generations await the day when it is safe to surface.

Something will happen, forcing her to explore the outside American wasteland and defend herself against the mutant creatures that now roam the Earth.

The series is not a direct adaptation or retelling of one of the games. It does exist in the canon, but tells its own story.

Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner are the showrunners. Other cast members include Aaron Moten in the role of Maximus, Walton Goggins plays The Ghoul; and Kyle MacLachlan as Overseer Hank. Moises Arias, Sarita Choudhury, Michael Emerson, Leslie Uggams, Frances Turner, Dave Register, Zach Cherry, Johnny Pemberton, Rodrigo Luzzi, Annabel O’Hagan, and Xelia Mendes-Jones round out the roster.

The Fallout trailer is expected shortly, ahead of the show debuting on Amazon Prime Video on April 12th.
