This is Spinal Tap 2 is definitely happening. Director Rob Reiner’s first movie was 1984s This Is Spinal Tap, a movie that frequently gets referred to as a cult classic. Now Reiner has confirmed that a shooting date is set for the sequel.
Reiner was on the RHLSTP With Richard Herring podcast in the UK and he says they will be on-set in February. David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer), and Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest) will return alongside Reiner appearing as Martin ‘Marty’ Di Bergi. Tony Hendra, who played the band’s manager Ian Faith, has passed away. No word yet on an array of drummers.
This sequel will follow events after Ian’s widow inherits a contract that says Spinal Tap owes them one more concert. She will sue them if they don’t perform, so the long-dissolved band is forced to reunite in order to put on this concert.
Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Garth Brooks are all rumored to be appearing in the movie. This Is Spinal Tap 2 was sold at Cannes last year ahead of a March 19th 2024 release, but the strikes impacted those plans. No current release date is known.
The story of “one of England’s loudest bands” began in 1979 on an ABC television sketch comedy pilot The T.V. Show, starring Rob Reiner. The sketch, actually a mock promotional video for the song Rock and Roll Nightmare, was written by Reiner and the band. This was then adapted into the 1984 mockumentary film.
The band has occasionally reformed since the movie. One memorable occasion was on January 18, 1991, for a special performance at the Disneyland Hotel that included new material and featured on the 1992 release, Break Like the Wind, an album produced in part by T-Bone Burnett. This included a promotional audition for a new drummer attended by Stephen Perkins of Jane’s Addiction, Gina Schock of The Go-Go’s, and Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac, who auditioned in a fireproof suit.
