By Following confirmation last month that the sequel to acclaimed 1995 heist drama “Heat” will be his next film, director Michael Mann has now seemingly confirmed one of the film’s leading men is in talks.
Speaking with EW to promote the upcoming theatrical release of his new film “Ferrari,” Mann was asked straight up about reports that he’ll work with Adam Driver again on the film to which Mann says: “Yeah, we’re in discussion. That’s all I can say about it.”
Driver has long been rumored to play the younger version of Robert DeNiro’s Neil McCauley from the first film. Mann effectively dodged the question of Driver’s casting last month during an event in London which is where he confirmed “Heat 2” would be his next film.
Mann and Meg Gardiner co-wrote the book published last year which serves as both a prequel and sequel to the events of the feature.
The story jumps between two time periods, the first following Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer’s role) as he tries to evade LAPD and Detective Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino’s role) following the events of the original film.
The second takes us back to Chicago in 1988 when McCauley, Shiherlis, and their high-line crew took scores on the West Coast, the US-Mexican border, and now in Chicago.
Hanna, meanwhile, is cutting his teeth as a rising star in the Chicago police department chasing an ultraviolent gang of home invaders. The fallout from those past events causes unexpected repercussions in the present.
