One thing interesting about the actor’s strike is that it was bookended by casting announcements for James Gunn’s upcoming “Superman: Legacy” film.
Stars David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane were confirmed for their roles in late June. Then, a day before the strike began, several others were locked in such as Nathan Fillion and Edi Gathegi.
More recently, just days after the strikes were over, other cast members for the film were announced including Nicholas Hoult, Skyler Gisondo and more. Whilst Gunn hasn’t announced at least one key role left, namely Perry White, he has spoken about the casting process this holiday weekend.
Answering fan questions on Threads, Gunn says none of the casting took place during the strike and many of the recently announced names were secured prior to the strike:
“That would never happen with any of the parties involved (not actors, not agents, not studios). Skyler Gisondo and Sara Sampaio and María Gabriela de Faría were all actually cast, contracts done, BEFORE the strike happened. And they were troopers about keeping the secret, which I’m sure was difficult.”
Gunn was also asked about fan casting for movies and whether it’s actually useful or considered at all. He says sometimes it is:
“When I’m casting a role I will sometimes see who fans have suggested online for folks I or my casting directors haven’t considered. Sometimes they have good ideas, sometimes terrible ones. I don’t remember it actually leading to someone being cast, however.”
Gunn’s film will be the first movie released in the new DCU and will arrive in theaters on July 11th 2025.
