By Following in the wake of Tuesday’s announcement video, a very welcome bit of news regarding the upcoming new “The Karate Kid” film has emerged.
On Tuesday came a video in which Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan, the stars of the 1984 original and the 2010 remake of “The Karate Kid” respectively, confirmed they will reprise their popular characters for a new “The Karate Kid” film at Sony Pictures.
Rob Lieber (“Peter Rabbit”) wrote the script which follows a teenager from China now living on the U.S. east coast. They find strength and direction via martial arts and a tough but wise mentor.
The studio says the film will “continue the mythology of the original franchise” but the eponymous kid will be a newcomer with a casting search underway.
An update from Gizmodo indicates that while the team behind Netflix’s smash hit “Cobra Kai” aren’t directly involved in the project, they have been involved in the process.
Sony Pictures Television produces “Cobra Kai” for Netflix, whilst Sony Pictures is producing the film. The site indicates the show’s creators Jon Hurwitz, Josh Heald, and Hayden Schlossberg know the film is happening and have offered assistance when asked.
A source adds that the team “has seen and given notes on all iterations of the scripts”. In addition, award-winning “The End of the F—ing World” creator Jonathan Entwistle, who is directing the film, reportedly “speaks to them often”.
The sixth and final season of “Cobra Kai” is gearing up to film and is expected to hit Netflix in the back half of 2024 and before the new “The Karate Kid” film hits cinemas with that movie targeting a December 13th 2024 release.
