The first “Aquaman” film was a smash hit – its first day of ticket pre-sales was the highest in the history of Atom Tickets, and it went on to a strong opening weekend debut of $67.9 million.
More surprisingly, it stayed strong in the days and weeks after, going on to gross $335.1 million domestically and $813.4 million overseas – generating a billion-dollar worldwide hit for the studio.
Don’t expect the same for the sequel with the title just hitting long-range tracking projections and coming in short. According to Box-Office Pro, the film is currently headed for a $32-42 million domestic opening weekend.
That’s around 47%-62% that of its predecessor, and whilst it’s easily the biggest project opening of next month – it marks yet another soft start for a DC movie and an overall superhero movie in 2023. They also suggest the film’s final domestic gross will be around half that of its predecessor.
The outlet also indicates first-day pre-sales are pacing 25% ahead of the “Shazam!” sequel and 62% behind “Black Adam” after one day of sample market tracking. The holiday in the U.S. right now however is expected to have had an impact on that front.
The film has little in the way of competition with “Wonka” opening the week before to $25-35 million, whilst “Migration” will debut the same day and is tracking for a $25-30 million start.
